Free tire recycling at Sioux Falls Landfill starts Wednesday

Residents in five different counties will be able to recycle tires for free at the Sioux Falls Landfill starting on Wednesday. Those counties are Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, and Turner. The landfill received a $100,000 grant from the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources in order for this service to be offered for free. The city will then pay up to $25,000 to match that grant. When the $100,000 is used up to dispose the tires, then the service won't be offered for free.

The city is offering this complimentary service to avoid standing water in tires lying around because it's a popular place for mosquitoes to breed. It's part of an effort to reduce the mosquito population. The superintendent at the landfill, Dustin Hansen, also said it helps reduce fire hazards.

This free service will only be offered to residents, not commercial businesses. The landfill in Sioux Falls is open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM. It's closed on Sundays. It is located at 26750 464th Avenue, Hartford, just west of Sioux Falls from 41st Street.
